Want a Recession-Proof Retail Job? Check Out Pet Supplies.

Want a Recession-Proof Retail Job? Check Out Pet Supplies. was originally published on College Recruiter.

The “Pet and Pet Supplies Stores” industry grew 4% in the 12 months ending June 2009 and has been 98% recession-proof since 2000. Plus, it’s grown 40% since 2000 – three times faster than the workforce growth.
This gives you a triple benefit. First, finding a job today in the Pet Supply industry will be a lot easier than other industries. Second, keeping your job long term will probably be easier. Third, the demand outpaces supply, giving your more salary negotiating leverage.
The only other Retail industry that comes close to being this robust is “Warehouse clubs and supercenters.”

In terms of your job search and career, here are three questions you should ask:

  1. How fast is your industry growing today?
  2. How fast has your industry grown historically?
  3. How recession-proof is your industry historically?

If you don’t consider all three factors, you could be misled. For example, the “Specialty food stores” industry grew 1.7% in the last 12 months – which on its own might lead you to conclude that finding a job will be easier – and indeed it might be. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll find that employment is down 16% since 2000 and it’s only 16% recession-proof – giving you less salary negotiating leverage and lowering your odds of keeping the job long term.
Executives can use this information to make their best choice of industries to pursue. College students might find this especially helpful as they choose their major. The flip side can also be revealing: if you’re in an industry that’s declining and/or unstable, it might be time to switch.
